From Lines and Shapes to City

Buildings are a part of a city 's unique character while its infrastructure networks are like the arteries in our human body that brings life to every part of the city. What makes up a good city depends a lot on the mix of buildings and its infrastructure networks.

“From Lines and Shapes to City” is a 4-day workshop series that brings the children on an adventure as a junior urban planner. The workshops seek to explore the city focusing on transportation networks and geometry forms of buildings that make up our city. Participants will be introduced to the urban environment and the basics of urban planning. As a junior urban planner, they will plan, design and build their imaginary city .

Day 1
After being introduced to the world of urban planning from what is a city to the basic principles of urban design, they will take on the role of a junior urban planner to plan, design and map out their imaginary city on paper.
Mapping and geography skills will be picked up along the way and put to good use as they whip up their own city map!

Day 2
What is a geometric net? It is a 2-dimensional figure that can be folded into a three dimensional model. In a way, it is like the architect’s architectural drawings of elevations and plans put together on a single diagram.
We will be exploring nets in greater detail by first observing the geometric shapes and patterns in our city and then identifying the relationships of the shapes in 2 and 3 dimensions.

Day 3
Through hands-on exploration, the participants will set out to design a landmark out of geometric solids.
Day 2 and Day 3 workshops are intended to connect learning in Math with Architecture through hands-on design and exploration while developing their observation skills to “see” Math around us in our city.

Day 4
“What makes a good city?” With our landmark buildings built up, it is up to the participants to decide where to position them in a given plot of land and connect them together to build an ideal city. We will revisit the concepts of urban planning learnt in Day 1 and develop problem solving skills as we work together as a team to make the city a better place to live, work and play.
